North Lake Tahoe Recreation Update

North Lake Tahoe ski resorts continue to crank out millions of gallons of snow thanks to capital investments in snowmaking. Currently, there are 51 lifts turning, 88 trails open and 9 terrain parks with 84 features.

As part of Olympic Heritage Week is the Nordic Olympic Trails Fundraiser Wednesday, January 11, 6-8 p.m., at West Shore Café & Inn, right on the lake in Homewood. The fundraiser contributes to the preservation of the Olympic Nordic trails, which were used during the 1960 Winter Olympics. Historic 1960 Olympic memorabilia will be available for viewing. There will also be live music and a silent auction. Tickets are $40/person at the door.

The Alpenglow Sports Lake Tahoe Winter Film Series continues Thursday, January 12 with tales of local mountain guide Adrian Ballinger’s amazing Himalayan adventure. This event is free, with dinner specials beginning at 5:30 p.m., and will be held at The Sawtooth Ridge Café in Tahoe City.

The Olympic Heritage festivities continue Friday, January 13 with the Olympian Dinner, 6-8 p.m., at Granlibakken Resort in Tahoe City. Participants have the opportunity to mingle with other Nordic enthusiasts while contributing toward the Olympic Trails restoration, a project on the scenic West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The dinner special is all-inclusive and is $25/person.

The North Tahoe Arts Center in Tahoe City will host an open reception Friday, January 13, 5-7 p.m., highlighting 30 Years of The Weekly covers (a longtime North Lake Tahoe publication). The exhibit is on display through February 27.

Northstar California will host a Star Gazing Snowshoe Tour Friday, January 13, 5-7 p.m., with star guide and poet Tony Berendsen. Tours include a fun space quiz, a laser tour of the stars and constellations, a telescopic viewing using top-of-the-line Celestron telescopes and wine and hot chocolate around a fire pit. Cost is $50/adult and $25/child (ages 10-12 years).

The closing of the Olympic Heritage Celebration takes place Sunday, January 15 with an interpretive tour of the Olympic Ski Trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park, noon to 2 p.m. This event is free and parking is $8/vehicle. The official closing ceremony will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m., also free and at Sugar Pine Point, and will host past Olympians and local dignitaries and the extinguishing of the Olympic caldron. A highlight of the closing ceremonies will be the Great Basin Native American Dancers who will perform a Snow Dance.

The Tahoe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus presents “Mendelssohn in the Mountains” Saturday, January 21, 4 p.m., at the North Tahoe Event Center in Kings Beach. Tickets are $25/adult, $5/student with kids under 12 years free.

Experience virgin olive oils and hear from an expert, a third generation grower and professional taster from the UC Davis Olive Oil Center Tasting Panel, Sunday, January 22, 5-7 p.m. It’s all part of a series of events presented by Cedar House Sport Hotel in Truckee. Presentation/tasting is $18/person.

In Incline Village, the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences hosts “Fragrance Chemicals: What’s the Stink?” Thursday, January 26, 6-7 p.m. UC Davis researchers recently conducted a survey on this and emerging environmental issues and will share the results, as well as help attendees learn more about the ingredients in their favorite personal care products. The cost is a $5 donation/person.

The North Lake Tahoe Express daily airport shuttle service is available to and from North Lake Tahoe and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. The shuttle runs from 3:30 a.m. until midnight. Fees are $40 per person, one-way, and $75 round trip. Discounts are available for groups of two or more. Reservations are required and can be made four hours in advance.
